Dinner Venue: Enventys Partners - 520 Elliot St., Charlotte, NC 28202 (2nd Floor)
Arrival/Wine Glass 6:30 PM - Buffet Dinner: 7:00 PM till 9:00 PM
Guest Speaker: Michael Graff
Publisher, The Charlotte Optimist
Theme: “The New Charlotte: Between Memory and Forward Momentum”
Who Told the Story Yesterday, Who Shapes It Today, and Who Will Define It Tomorrow?
Charlotte is one of America’s fastest-growing and most ambitious cities, yet its identity still feels actively under construction. Beneath the cranes, growth statistics, and polished narratives lies a deeper question:
What kind of city is Charlotte becoming — and who gets to shape the story?
In this conversation, Michael Graff, Publisher of The Charlotte Optimist online newsletter, reflects on Charlotte not simply as a place, but as a living narrative shaped by leadership, memory, migration, ambition, and civic imagination.
Drawing from decades in journalism and storytelling, he explores how cities understand themselves, what gets forgotten during rapid growth, and why thoughtful local journalism may become one of the most important civic institutions of the future.
The evening is structured around Past / Present / Future — an exploration of where Charlotte came from, where it stands today, and what kind of emotional, cultural, and civic legacy it may leave behind.
Our Dinner Conversation Topics:
“The Charlotte We Inherited” - The culture, leadership, and identity of Charlotte before the current era of explosive growth.
“How Charlotte Understands Itself Today” - Charlotte’s current identity, tensions, ambitions, and civic psychology.
“Who Will Shape Charlotte Next?” - The future of leadership, community, storytelling, and belonging in Charlotte.
“If cities are ultimately stories people agree to believe in together… what story do you hope Charlotte chooses next and writes together?” - This is ultimately a conversation about the soul of a city — and the people helping define it. It’s an invitation to see the glass as full and a half to design the future we want.
About Our Guest Speaker:
Michael Graff is a Charlotte resident since 2013. He previously lived throughout North Carolina. His wife is a Charlotte native who grew up with institutions like Muggsy and Mr. K's, graduated from Myers Park High School, and comes from a family with generations of roots in west Mecklenburg. Together, they are raising two sons in Charlotte, and he considers one of life's greatest pleasures to be walking the city's neighborhoods and talking with people who know and love the community.
He has spent more than 25 years in the media industry as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor, freelance writer, nonfiction author, essayist, and senior executive overseeing one of the nation's most successful digital media platforms.
Most recently, he served as Southern Bureau Chief for Axios, leading seven editorial teams spanning from Richmond to New Orleans.
Prior to Axios, he was Editor-in-Chief of Charlotte Agenda, guiding the publication until its acquisition by Axios in 2020.
Before joining Charlotte Agenda, he built a successful independent writing career, contributing to publications including POLITICO, ESPN, Garden & Gun, and The Guardian.
Earlier, he served as Editor of Charlotte magazine, where the publication earned numerous journalism honors, including a nomination as the best city magazine in the United States.
Before that, he was Senior Editor at Our State magazine.
He began his journalism career as a newspaper reporter in North Carolina and Virginia, building the foundation for a career dedicated to telling stories that connect people to the places they call home.

TheSircle: a Theater of Purpose - Stories. Ideas. Relationships - The Power of Profound Leadership Conversations
In TheSircle: A Theater of Purpose, I tell the story of an experiment I started for entirely selfish reasons: I was tired of leaving professional gatherings full of exchanges but empty of anything that lasted a week. So, I built the table I always wanted to sit at, and discovered that what I craved, leaders everywhere were quietly starving for. TheSircle Executive Club started in 2009 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has been gathering intellectually curious leaders for dinner ever since.
NOW AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.COM - Paperback: 267 pages - Kindle/Digital: 293 pages
The book takes its name from the three forces I believe change us when we gather honestly: Stories (how we transmit what experience taught us, stripped of the performance layer), Ideas (the currency we exchange when we are truly present to a question), and Relationships (the long-arc infrastructure behind every career, decision, and legacy).
At its core lies a single, bracing conviction: the quality of our conversations determines the quality of our thinking, the quality of our thinking determines the quality of our leadership, and the quality of our leadership determines the quality of the world we build together.
Whether the reader leads a company, a team, or simply a life worth examining, they will come away with a way to think better in the company of others. And that is my larger ambition: to carry this practice beyond Charlotte and across oceans, building a worldwide federation of facilitators and tables so that anyone, in any city, can pull up a chair.
The theater of purpose belongs to everyone fascinated enough to share stories, ideas, and relationships around the world—because the table is the answer wherever the hunger lives.
