Dinner Topic: "Find Your Voice and Lead”
Guest Presenter: Katie Oates, Folk Music Artist
Venue: The Ritz Carlton Charlotte - The Study Private Room (Second Floor)
Duration: from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Katie Oates graduated from Davidson College in 1986 with a degree in English literature (combined with a year at the University of Edinburgh studying literature and art history). In the late 80s/early 90s whe worked at Harvard Community Health Plan in Boston in health care improvement serving on the faculty of the first two Institute for Healthcare Improvement conferences (founded by Don Berwick, MD). She also served as first author on several articles in the medical literature focused on improving physician behavior and the impact of computerized clinical reminder systems. After receiving a Masters of Theological Studies at Vanderbilt University (focused on ecological theology), Katie worked for the Tennessee Environmental Council and served on the board of Charlotte’s Clean Air Coalition.
After stepping out of paid employment to raise her two children, Katie continued to work primarily on environmental advocacy (in schools, churches, and the community) and advocacy for the homeless. In the late 2000s she helped start a choir at Urban Ministry. As she heard stories of lost dreams from those who had been disenfranchised and estranged from society, she realized she had lost dreams of her own.
From the day Katie was born, she sang. Her parents tell her that as a toddler she rattled the sides of her crib and sang fragments of a hymn to wake them up. She demonstrated such a love for music, that her Mom began teaching her piano at age 4. No matter where she lived or the jobs she worked, Katie found a way to sing: as a section leader and soloists in school and community choirs, and leads in community theatre, and solo performances in the community.
But something was missing. She needed to find her own voice. In 2010 she began learning how to play the guitar and writing her own songs. Her first cd (Going Over Home, 2012) contains some of her favorite spirituals, folk, classical and modern arias. In 2016 she released a 5 song EP (Something True) and in 2018 a 12 song cd (Play Me) of original songs that evoke the jazz, music theatre, blues, classical and pop influences from her life of performing. She continues to write songs and perform throughout the Charlotte community, often lending her voice to benefits and causes she supports.
We will explore poignant questions in conversation, sharing Stories, Ideas and deepening Relationships as we celebrate the start of TheSircle's 11th year.
