Dinner Topic: "Cowboy Up: Recover from defeat and Succeed”
Guest Presenter: Chaz Seale, CEO of Billie Jean King’s Eye Coach
Venue: The Ritz Carlton Charlotte - The Study Private Room (Second Floor)
Duration: from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Chaz Seale is the CEO of Billie Jean King’s Eye Coach (a training device that accelerates the teaching and learning process in tennis). In his own words: My background certainly could be called diverse. It often included marketing, which I began by selling “Boy Bonds” on the streets to passing strangers at eight years old. Sometimes I was really good, but there were also days that sucked. That’s a good recap for my career. My roles have varied greatly by function, location and purpose. I started as an entrepreneur and have circle back to that role today as CEO of Billie Jean King’s Eye Coach. I’ve served as a top level executive experiencing some grand successes and as alluded to, some few frustrating failures. Let’s stick with the positive side for a moment. I’ve helped lead and build complex teams and companies to market prominence and even dominance; increasing sales and profitability in the process. Amongst these were two companies that perennially topped the country’s “most admired” lists. However looking back, I don’t feel that any position defines a person. That is determined more by a composite of all experience and by what drives us personally. If the “quality of our lives depend on the quality of our experience”, I’ve indeed been a very fortunate guy. A few examples might be worthwhile. I started “work” when I was eight years old and have worked ever since. I believe that I had 30 jobs by the time I was twenty. (Couldn’t keep a job I guess.)
I started a few businesses in totally dissimilar fields (entertainment promotion, sport, perfume, marketing, financial, etc.). I did this based on the knowledge from gained my first semi-official job as an advertising agency stock room boy. (BTW, my stock room sign read, “Be kind to your stock room boy, he may be your next president.”) I subsequently did become a partner and helped build one of the U.S.'s top mid-market advertising agencies. We sold the agency to the world’s largest agency, again learning a lesson the hard way. It was the first of my 17 acquisitions and mergers.Outside of for-profit business I’ve had a grand time helping start, lead and participate in a wide-variety of non-profits. These ranged from inner city work, sports and children’s organizations, the nation’s biggest Alzheimer’s support team, and had a 26-year history as Chairman or Vice-Chairman in international micro-enterprise. These have given me great joy plus the opportunity to travel throughout the world. However, far beyond any of this is to have a family that is close-knit, yet independent, and involved in some the most interesting vocations imaginable.
We will explore poignant questions in conversation, sharing Stories, Ideas and deepening Relationships as we celebrate TheSircle's 10th year.
